Giving Boulder Love, Day 15: Battle of the Chai

This is Day 15 of a 21-Day Salute ™, an attempt to share a little bit of what I love about living in Boulder. Turns out I’m also a glutton for punishment and like undertaking random challenges.

chai

I’m a dirty chai kind of a girl and I’m proud of that. When ordering at the coffee shop across the street from my office, the barista asks which variety of local chai I’d like.

That’s what life in Boulder is like…competing chai producers, both within city limits, are vying for my business. So I’m actually letting you know about two local companies in this post. (Don’t say I never went the extra mile for you…)

I offer you a Tuesday night match-up of Bhakti Chai vs. Third Street Chai.* To be honest, I’ve had both brands at local coffee shops but have never purchased a bottle of either. I think chai tastes better when someone else makes it.

thirdstreet

bhakti

After sampling both, I prefer Bhakti. It’s not as sweet as the Third Street variety and has a spicier flavor. Bhakti also scored points with me for coming out with a flavor last year that I fully support…

barakti

But that’s just my two cents.

Thing is–I don’t drink chai much and would like to ask those chai drinkers who know their stuff to shed some light on this topic for me.

Which one do you prefer? Bhakti or Third Street Chai?

*You should have seen the boxing poster I attempted to make with the companies logos. I ran out of time but it would have put many amateur boxing federation flyers to shame. I could have been a contender…

  • Coffee Sanctuary is closing unfortunately. Dec 31st is their last day of business... one more day left. Apparently they will be selling their chai through a new coffeehouse near 28th and Iris called Red Rock, so their legendary chai will live on, even after their coffee shop has closed up.
  • Chinglish
Bhakti, surprisingly, has more sugar than it's Third Street competitor. Just because Bhakti loads up on Cardamom and Ginger, making you feel the spice more than the sugar, doesn't mean it contains less of it.
  • There is no doubt among the BCSB Snobs that Bhakti rules, but we're willing to try Coffee Sanctuary
  • That looks delicious... I wounder what's the taste of it.
  • Amy
Bhakti. LOVE it. But someone told me chai decreases sex drive in men. What do you know about that?
  • Oooh, I'm a big Bhakti Chai Lover, no question. I even drove from Denver to Boulder just to get Bhakti Chai before I figured out where to get it in Denver. Love, love Bhakti Chai!!!
  • Bhakti Chai for sure... It's so yummy and spicy! It's the fresh-pressed ginger they put in it. Have you tried their coffee version? So good. I agree with the other commenter that Coffee Sanctuary's Chai is delicious as well.
  • I have to say I prefer Bhakti hands down. Not only do I really like it, I also dislike Third Street and other brands for one simple reason: they add citric acid. I have never had homemade chai that had any tartness to it, and I don't want it in my coffee-house chai either. Maybe they add it as a preservative, maybe they all think it tastes better with it ... I don't know and I don't care. Make mine Bhakti!

...or The Market on Larimar Square ... they make their own house chai that's pretty good ... but not as good as Bhakti.
  • i have a new addiction to the Bhakti Chai too!! spicy deliciousness. love it iced!
  • Bhakti for the same reason as you, I prefer a chai that isn't as sweet. But Third Street is not settling, it's fabulous as well.

One morning at breakfast at the South Side Cafe (walnut) they had a chai birthday cake as the cake of the day, it was insanely divine. But then again, I love everything chai.
  • I love drinking chai, in fact my husband also loves it!

I'll mix it up a bit, you should go try Coffee Sanctuary's Chai. John said he spent a long time refining his own custom recipe, and I think it's quite good and possibly my favorite. It's definitely spicy like Bhakti, but a bit sweeter, and has some interesting fruit notes in it. http://www.coffeesanctuary.com/location.html
  • Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion. I knew that if I asked the wisdom of Twitter, I would find out something new and interesting. Never fails...

I'll be sure to give Coffee Sanctuary's version a try!
