Soon I’ll be wearing long-sleeve shirts buttoned up to my neck with floor-length denim skirts

It was time for something drastic.

I had heard stories of this CrossFit, whispered rumors about meetings in the basement of a former church, mentions of tough workouts, amazing results and top-notch athletes. A friend even suggested I check it out. Two years ago.

But recently, taking a different route home from work, I stumbled across a new CrossFit studio. Thinking it was a sign that I should finally find out more about CrossFit, I did just that. A week and one kick-ass introductory class later, I was a member.

And yes, they’re on Twitter.

Now, with the short-term goal of rocking it in Belize on my honeymoon, I’m about to embark on a brand-new physical adventure. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be doing CrossFit three times a week in the morning before work. I used to be very against the idea of paying anyone to help me with training, but fortunately have matured to a point where I’m okay with saying that I need someone to kick my ass coach me.

bj, ironman

This is the last coach I had. I think I paid him in beer. But he helped me with my swim stroke in preparation for my first triathlon.

In all honesty, CrossFit is definitely an experiment for me and I’m a little nervous about the whole thing. But I’m also excited to have a new physical challenge to motivate me through the holidays. Not to mention getting me ready for an injury-free ski season.

When I told my husband about CrossFit, he was a little doubtful. As he is of anything that takes me out of bed earlier in the morning. He said that it sounded like a cult and that he was ready to call my mom if intervention was needed.

At least they’re a well-toned cult, I thought to myself. Also…calling my mom? Did he really think that threats would be effective?

Later that same week, I got my first CrossFit newsletter. In it, they featured an athlete profile, a CrossFit member by the name of Chad. He answered a bunch of interview questions but the last one especially caught my eye…

Anything you’d like to add?
I’m glad that I’m CrossFitting now.  I was burnt out prior to joining, doing the same basic gym workout routines (with the associated repetitive injuries) and frustrated unable to run - I needed an new fitness outlet.  I enjoy being part of the cult now (except the Paleo thing - but I’m working on that ;-)”

Did you catch that last part?

He enjoys being part of the cult now.

(And he’s using CrossFit as a verb–which brings up a host of other grammatical issues for me…)

With a wink and a smile, Chad may have just confirmed my husband’s cult hypothesis. My first session is tomorrow morning and I’ll report back with details.

If they let me.

Tara, welcome to CF Roots and kudos on taking the first step!! Roots is my second CF gym that I've been to and I absolutely love it...everyone is super supportive and Nicole and Eric will do whatever it takes to help each person develop as athletes and individuals. By no means am I a pro but I can push myself harder with CF than I ever thought possible and that confidence rolls over into other aspects of my life :) And don't worry, I still get nervous before each class but as soon as we get going it all fades away. Congrats again on coming in, that's the hardest part :):)

And John is right, it's a cult because once you start and see the results, you will never want to quit!
  • Thanks for the wisdom and the welcome. I'm overwhelmed by all the support shown to me by the CF community and it's only been ONE class. So far, so good.
  • The only reason people get into the cult mindset is because it works so well, once you get into it you'll be so psyched you can't believe that the rest of the world isn't in on it...
  • Thanks for the insight. Look for the cult of John Wall coming to a town near you soon...
  • The Cult of JW remains stealth, the public and our enemies never see us coming. We also occasionally enjoy baked goods under the cover of darkness.

I've had a friend after me for a couple years as well to check out CrossFit. Every time we did a CF workout together, I ended up getting hurt so I never really got on board (even though I loved the idea of it) until I saw the Foundations course offered by Roots. "PERFECT!", I thought to myself and quickly got signed up.

As they say, the rest is history. It was a great experience in a safe and supportive environment and I've now incorporated CF into my overall fitness regime. While I was as nervous as you going in, I was psyched to quickly realize that one's "ego is checked at the door". In other words, it's completely okay to go lite on weights, etc. The coaching encourages working at a level that fits where you are w/o all the typical group pressure to measure up to some predefined performance level. Plus, if we're talking about Nicole, she is a crack-up and keeps it really fun.

Regarding the cult comment, I can't believe there's anything literal behind any comments that have been made. I've trained for major endurance events with people over the years who have been in real athletic cults here in Boulder and CF ain't even in the same timezone. However, you will find some seriously dedicated and supportive new people among the folks attempting to become masters of the workout of the day. For me it's kind of like my recess for the day...playful, educational and heck if I ain't finding strength that I thought was long gone. In short, no regrets...
  • Finn, I like thinking of CF as "recess for the day". It's amazing how invigorated I felt after the morning session and how the good feeling kept me going all day.

And the cult comment was meant to be humorous more than anything else. After living in Boulder for as long as I have, I've seen quite a few cults...including the cult of beer snobs, Ironman athletes and Ultimate Frisbee. Besides, as long as I'm not asked to have sex with any old men, then cults don't sound all that bad. ;)
  • I have mad respect for you. Let me know how it goes... Not that I'll be joining because I'm a total wuss and I like it.
  • The first class this morning was tough, I cannot lie. But I'm not sure which was worse...the workout or the fact that the owner of the CrossFit studio read this post before I came in -- yikes.

Don't worry. While I won't be posting any 'before' pics, I will be posting updates. You can suffer along with me from the comfort of your own home.

Also? I like that you're a total wuss as well. Good to know who I can beat up if I have to. ;)

I'll have to try it out now!

    Feel good you cult recruiter?
  • I think you'd really dig it Andrew. We're similar in that we both like to do many different physical activities and with CrossFit, you build strong components so that you're prepared for anything.

And although I never thought it would be on there, I'll add 'cult recruiter' to my list of skills. Might come in handy again someday...
